How Deaf do you need to be ?

It may surprise you that you do not need to have a complete hearing loss to play for EDRU or EDRUW (England Deaf Rugby Union for Women)...

To qualify, you only need a combined average hearing loss of 25dB or more in both ears This roughly translates to a minimum hearing loss in both ears or a moderate hearing loss in one ear but can hear normally in the other. Not all of the players wear hearing aids or only communicate by sign language, and this has never stopped all the players communicating and play rugby as a squad.

EDRU can offer Deaf Awareness advice to clubs and schools Integrate Deaf and Hard of Hearing players to clubs and liaise with club members to ensure the player(s) are managed correctly.

"My name is Brett Pruce, I am severely Deaf and I play for Alyestone St James RFC as Hooker for the 1st XV, more importantly I am also Hooker for the England Deaf. I have been involved with the England Deaf from the beginning of existence way back in 2003...there is no doubt, we are striving to become a real professional organisation"

Brett is a senior player in the England Deaf Rugby Union squad with a total of 11 Caps

We are recruiting rugby players to play for the England Deaf Rugby team. We play regular international fixtures such as Wales, France and Scotland and we need new players now !
Whilst the existing squad is strong, we are looking for players who can make this squad even more stronger to win the Home Nations tournament and dominate International Deaf Rugby.

Ladies...

EDRUW is a completely new venture and therefore, we are looking for Ladies to join EDRU to create a 'England Deaf Rugby Union for Women' (EDRUW)  There are a number of female players who have already joined the EDRUW, and as always - we need more ladies to join, we need you to apply now!

Jessica Everhurst (photo above) says,
"I met the Director of Rugby for England Deaf; Tony Stoyles; whilst volunteering at a NDCS event and I asked to see what my options were to play rugby for EDRUW as I had not played rugby before, after some discussions with Tony, he advised me to join and play for a local club to gain some experience. I have sinced joined a club and I thoroughly enjoy playing for my club and hope to be playing for EDRUW in the very near future.
The coaching staff have been very accomodating and very understanding, being involved has given me more confidence to look forward to all future training sessions and be part of EDRUW and move into the future...what we do need though, is more players to join the squad, so 'Come On Ladies'...get in touch!"

So if you or anyone else you know in your club that has 'slight' hearing loss or Deaf, come and join the EDRUW and represent YOUR country!
