Hanratty announced as EDRU Women's Captain

Hanratty (pictured right) becomes only the 3rd EDRU Women's Captain in history, following in the footsteps of previous captains Debbie Challoner and more recently, Gina Iaquaniello (pictured left).

Iaquaniello, who has recently been juggling a number of responsibilities within EDRU, will now focus her attention her role as Chairperson, England Deaf Mens' Team Manager whilst also continuing to represent EDRU as a player.

EDRU Head Coach, Sean Fletcher said "Gina has been a tremendous captain for our women's team during such a successful period, overseeing the development and being a driving force on and off the pitch. Gina's work rate as a player, and her leadership skills have been testament to the amount of respect she has amongst everyone at EDRU, and we are incredibly lucky to have her involved in all of the different capacities.

Fletcher added "Juggling the different hats Gina has had to wear is extremely difficult, and the decision between Ben and myself was that this is the right time for Steph, to step up to the mark and continue the great work Gina has done as captain. Steph, as Vice Captain, already holds a great deal of respect amongst her team-mates, and we're excited to see the squad go from strength to strength.

Hanratty, who has played a massive role in recent successes on the pitch, is relishing the opportunity to become captain, but recognises the big shoes she has to fill following on from her predecessor "It’s an honour to take over from Gina. She has been the driving force behind the womens' team for such a long time and I hope to step up to the mark. I am really looking forward to what the future has in store for myself and the squad." Womens Coach Ben Mousley added "Steph's enthusiasm is infectious, you can't help but be caught up in it. This passion I am sure will drive the squad on as we look to progress season upon season. Gina has been a trail blazer for women's Deaf Rugby and am certain Steph will not only carry on this great work, but add to it."
