EDRU Secretary, Lyndon James praises Ely Weekend
Lyndon says:
I thought you might all like to know how much of a success the weekend at Ely RFC turned out to be.
I think all of us who were able to attend enjoyed tremendous hospitality from the Ely club and that we were made extremely welcome. They provided a real test on the field and gave us the opportunity to get ourselves back into shape as a team. But there was far more than that.
Following that weekend we have been approached by a professional fundraiser who, without any obligation from the EDRU, wants to find new sponsors for us. He already is the principal fundraiser for a professional sports organisation and he was so impressed by your performance and commitment he wants to extend his skills to EDRU.
The game was attended by the biggest crowd seen at Ely RFC for many years. The receipts for food and drink will provide the club with very welcome funds. Like many local clubs they struggle to keep their heads above water financially and our presence provided a huge boost for them.
Finally, you might like to know that local civic leaders were present at the game and were impressed by the way a disability rugby team could perform and the way in which Ely RFC could provide support to community rugby. It is expected that this will have roll on benefits for disability groups and Ely RFC in the future.
As you can see, there were no losers at the weekend and you provided huge benefits beyond simply training and getting match practice. You truly represent a flagship for community rugby. You should all be very proud of who you are and what you represent. I am certainly very proud of you all.
Lyndon James
Secretary
